Old Salt Warehouse

Alfolí de la Sal (the old salt warehouse) is the most important historical building of the village of l'Escala. Built in the late seventeenth century, in 1697, it was the great store of salt that accomplished the monopoly that the king of Spain Felipe II granted to this village a century ago, through a long period of prosperity. It was also customs ​​and the headquarters of the village fisheremen association. The basement of the building was a factory for salting anchovies for proper conservation. From this building salt was distributed to the other villages through the Empordà region. It is just a few meters away from the Platja de las Barques beach. Now it's an exhibition showroom, so you can visit it.
