Hostalric, to the south, is the former seat of the domains of the Viscounts of Girona-Cabrera. Perched on a lofty rock overlooking the River Tordera and strategically located on the road between Barcelona and Girona, it has a large medieval castle that was remodelled as a military fortress during the 18th century for defence purposes.
The castle bore witness to bloody battles such as that of the winter of 1810 when 3,000 bombs were dropped in only two days.
It features a spectacular walled enclosure measuring 600 metres in height with seven cylindrical towers.
