Hostalric, to the south, is the former seat of the domains of the Viscounts of Girona-Cabrera. Perched on a lofty rock overlooking the River Tordera and strategically located on the road between Barcelona and Girona, it has a large medieval castle that was remodelled as a military fortress during the 18th century for defence purposes.
