Get more active in the afternoon by playing a game of tennis on Nieves Mar’s courts. After showering and freshening up, you can head down to the hotel’s bar for a drink, or surf the internet using the free Wi-Fi access.
Dine on site in the evening in Nieves Mar’s very own restaurant, Ca La Neus, where you can sample Mediterranean-style dishes, including fish and seafood.
Nieves Mar is in L'Escala
L'Escala is the seaside village of the Costa Brava worldwide well-known for its anchovies. Several producers of different levels crafts, sell their major production manufactured in the village itself and its surroundings.
L'Escala emerged in the XVIth century as a small fishing port between the beaches of Empúries and Riells as dependent village of the city of Empúries, formerly occupied by the Romans and Greeks. The town's name comes from the place name Scala, the old name used to designate the port itself. In 1766 l'Escala gets its status as an independent village and became the province capital because of its important maritime customs, and their exporting importance of wine and salted fish.
In the XIXth century l'Escala still holds an economy based on fishing and the wine, until a new phenomenon appears in the region: tourism. Since the beginning of 1960, we find many visitors captivated by the beauty of L'Escala, beaches, culture and traditions.
The specialty of the town are the anchovies with bread and tomato, a very nice toast consisting on applying Ampurdán tomato over the bread and also some salted anchovy fillets. Each September is celebrated the the anchovies day, when banquets with this popular exquisite typical fish are organized in a popular way.
L'Escala has the most important archaeological museum in Catalonia. Around it you find the ruins of Ampurias, an archaeological site of first importance on Greek and Roman cultures.
Another of the attractions of L'Escala is the marine cemetery, close to the seaside boulevard (you can walk along it through the beaches of the village and encounter the Monument dedicated to the Sailors). Located behind the Nieves Mar Hotel, a few meters from the sea, this unique cemetery keeps the tomb of one of the most international women writers of Catalan literature: Caterina Albert, who signed in the nineteenth century under the pseudonym Victor Català, because of prejudices of her time.
In the center of l'Escala there is its old town and, near the Puig del Pedró (a little mound), you can still find a watchtower against piracy, from which the whole bay of Roses is seen, with the Pyrenees behind in the background.

Hotel heeft zeer fijne ligging ; met eigen bewaakte parking men te voet alles bereiken. Men kan naar het dorp 800 meter - San Martin De Ampurias 3.2 km - Riells 800 meter . Men kan door de hoge promenade na aan zee gaan liggen dan moet men iets verderop Riells . Maar aan het zwembad is een zee van ruimte. Kleine tegenvaller .......IK kom al 50 jaar in L'Escala en meerdere malen in Nieves Mar ; maar na al die jaren spreekt ere nog niemand vloeiend Frans of Engels ; dat begrijp ik niet . |

Ligging halverwege de boulevard, die loopt van playa Riells naar het centrum is prima. Zowel het strand als het centrum zijn "beloopbaar"(700-800 mtr.). Buiten het hoogseizoen voldoende gratis parkeergelegenheid op eigen terrein.(tijdens hoogseizoen kan ook op straat gratis geparkeerd worden). Het ruime zwembad wordt goed onderhouden en in tegenstelling tot wat een vorige recensent beschreef is het wel degelijk ZOET water. Dagelijks wordt hier iets NaCl aan toegevoegd(anti-bacterie) waardoor het water inderdaad iets "ziltig" smaakt. Alle kamers met balkon hebben fraai uitzicht over de baai van Riells, de jachthaven & het zwembad. Kamers en openb. ruimtes zijn rookvrij. Op de balkons, (voldoende) overdekte terassen en het zwembad mag wel gerookt worden. Ontbijtbuffet is niet bijzonder uitgebreid maar voldoende. Bij een langer verblijf zou enige afwisseling welkom zijn. Kortom prijs/kwaliteit ruim voldoende. Op tijd boeken want Nieves Mar is een van de weinige en het grootste hotel in L'Escala. Geen "hygienezakjes" op de badkamer. Slechts 1 prullenbak(!!) die (per abuis??) niet dagelijks geleegd werd. Personeel is nogal onpersoonlijk. Tijdens ons verblijf van 9 nachten bestond het enige "persoonlijke contact" door het personeel uit een "goede morgen" en "goede avond". |

Vom Balkon hatten wir einen schönen Blick auf das Meer und den Pool. Auf dem Gelände gibt es kostenlose Parkplätze (aufgrund begrenzter Parkmöglichkeiten empfiehlt es sich, das Zentrum von L'Escala, das nur wenige Minuten entfernt liegt, zu Fuß zu erkunden). Außerdem erhielten wir trotz abweichender Angaben einen kostenlosen WIFI-Zugang. Wir sind in dem Hotel vor allem wegen des zugehörigen Restaurants abgestiegen. Es bietet eine sehr gute Küche, die vom Guide Michelin seit vielen Jahren empfohlen wird. Am ersten Abend aßen wir à la carte. Einfach köstlich: Pica-pica de fritos. Obgleich Crema Catalana an diesem Tag nicht auf der Speisekarte stand, hat man sie auf Nachfrage für uns zubereitet. Für Hotelgäste bietet das Restaurant für nur 18,50 € ein täglich wechselndes Menü, bei dem man aus mehreren Gerichten pro Gang wählen kann. Dies ist sicher die günstigste Möglichkeit, die aus unserer Sicht leckere Küche kennenzulernen. Das geräumige, sehr saubere Zimmer hätte etwas moderner eingerichtet sein können und das Frühstücksbüffet könnte in der Tat etwas liebevoller präsentiert werden. Insbesondere wenn - wie bei uns in der Vorsaison - nicht sehr viele Hotelgäste da sind, wirkt das Restaurant etwas kühl. Kein direkter Nachteil, aber zu bedenken: Zum Schwimmen im Meer muss man in eine der benachbarten Buchten laufen oder fahren. |
