The center of Girona has one of the most important Jewish quarters in Spain. We know of the existence of the Jewish population in the city since the ninth century, although it was in the twelfth when they met as community about Força street, backbone of a neighborhood that arrived to host 800 people at its peak times.

In this neighborhood came to be, among other buildings, three synagogues, ritual baths (Mikwe), a Talmud school for children, a hospital and a hostel for Jewish visitors from other places.

On its narrow streets, which were closed at night, passed the lives of great thinkers, philosophers, doctors and Kabbalists of the time as Mosse ben Nahman (Bonastruc ça Porta, which names the Jewish Museum of Girona), Mesula ben Solomon of Piera, Azriel of Gerona, Jacob ben Sehet Gerondi or Salomo ben Ezra. The history of the Jews in Spain was severely disrupted by the expulsion issued against them by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492.
