Montjuic Bed & Breakfast

Onze de Setembre, 1, 17007 Girona
Exceptional, 9.5
Beautiful, peaceful villa with a magnificent view over Girona valley. Easy walk to center, although uphill when coming back. Good, relaxing beds, stylish interiors, an eye for specific details and especially gastronomically one of the best B&B's we've ever visited (the truffle flavoured chips were one of the special touches). Succulent breakfast with home made cakes, omelets, fruit, yogurt and carefully chosen artisanal cheeses and charcuterie!

Montjuic Bed & Breakfast is in Girona

Capital of the Costa Brava region and one of the capitals of Catalonia, Girona is a medium-sized city boasting a wealth of historic heritage. A university city and bustling service centre, in close proximity to the coast and the Pyrenees, and with an international airport, it is one of the most beloved cities in Catalonia.

Situated in the Ter valley at the point where the river enters the city lies the largest city park in Catalonia, La Devesa. The Onyar River, which flows through the historic quarter, has afforded an image which sets the city apart: a Florentine vision of earth-toned houses flanking the peaceful waters crossed by various bridges such as the Iron Bridge (by the architect Gustave Eiffel). The east bank of the river is home to the historic quarter while the west bank is home to the modern city. Just 30 minutes drive from the center of the Costa Brava and just over an hour from Barcelona, it has an excellent range of cultural, commercial and recreational offer.

Colour houses along the Onyar river, in Girona

If you have the opportunity to visit the Costa Brava you should not miss this city, which has the urban charm but also the cosy beauty of small towns. Like all corners of the Costa Brava, Girona is a city on a human scale so that it can perfect fit your travel needs and take advantage of its cultural offers as festivals, cultural activities, concerts... undoubtedly Girona is the city of the Costa Brava with an highest activity through all the year.

Girona centerMedieval walls of Girona

Strategic site on the northern route of the Via Augusta, it was first a Roman city, seat of the bishopric from the 5th century and capital of the earldom of Girona from the Carolingian era. Even in modern times, its resistance in the War against Napoleon (1808-1809) was legendary.

Its old quarter is dominated by the cathedral, with a majestic entrance (a Baroque staircase with almost one hundred steps). It comprises a large Romanesque bell tower and cloister, a Baroque façade and a Gothic nave. Moreover, it is the widest single nave (almost 30 metres) in medieval European architecture. The temple houses an extraordinary Romanesque masterpiece of textile art, the Tapestry of the Creation (11th century). The Chapter Museum exhibits an outstanding Beatus (10th century) by Ende, one of the few named female artists of the Middle Ages. Lovers of Romanesque and Gothic art must pay a visit to the Art Museum housed in the Episcopal Palace.

Behind the cathedral, the stroll along the ancient wall is an unrivalled vantage point. Visitors can gain an insight into Girona’s past at the History Museum. At the foot of the cathedral, visitors can explore the Call or Jewish quarter, few of which have been so well preserved. The streets surrounding Carrer de la Força and the house of Isaac the Blind (now the seat of the Jewish History Museum) were home to an active Jewish community for 600 years until their expulsion in 1492. The Call features its ritual baths, synagogues and an important Kabbalah school with such wise men as Nahmanides, more commonly known in Catalan as Bonastruc ça Porta.

Next to the cathedral, beyond the Sobreportes gateway, are two churches which form the silhouette of the old city: the Monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants (11th-12th century, a former Benedictine abbey), which houses the Archaeological Museum, featuring a magnificent Gothic nave and a cloister, and Sant Feliu, a stone’s throw from the River Onyar, a blend of different styles which in the presbytery conserves the early Christian tombs from the period of Christian persecution. It has a beautiful cloister and a two-floor octagonal bell tower, decorated with double glazing also in Lombard style. Sant Feliu church contains a chapel dedicated to the patron saint of the city. Legend has it that a swarm of flies emerged from the chapel which frightened off the French during the siege of 1285.

The Arab Baths constitute a unique Romanesque building which was designed according to a North-African model.

Girona CathedralBrigde over the Onyar river

One of the most emblematic images of Girona is that of the buildings on the river Onyar, which crosses the city. This is a series of houses on the river, in height, which are painted in bright colors. The city has eleven bridges over the river, and the best known of all is the Eiffel Bridge, designed by Gustave Eiffel and built shortly before the famous tower in Paris.

Girona’s historic centre boasts outstanding architecture and unforgettable nooks and crannies: the Church of Sant Nicolau, the Gothic building of Pia Almoina (a medieval charitable institution), the convents of Sant Domènec (now a university building) and El Carme, the mansions flanking Carrer dels Ciutadans such as the Palau Agullana and the Fontana d’Or (which hosts fine exhibitions), the Plaça del Vi, and the archways on Rambla de la Llibertat. However, Girona also has a wealth of popular legends including the witch of the cathedral (a sinner turned to stone, now a gargoyle on the north façade of the cathedral), the Cocollona (the monster that crosses the river on nights with a full moon) and the bottom of the lioness which brings good fortune to those who kiss it (in front of the Church of Sant Feliu). Girona is a city through which to saunter, brimming with myriad restaurants, designer boutiques and handcraft stores.

Notable buildings on the other bank of the river include the Farinera Teixidor flour mill and the Casa de la Punxa, part of the legacy of the Noucentista architect Rafael Masó. Visitors to this part of the city can also explore the Cinema Museum, the only one of its kind in Spain. Housing the Tomàs Mallol collection, it is a veritable journey through the passion and ingenuity that made cinema possible.

Carmen is a terrific host, extremely helpful. Nice views from our room.

Offering to serve us an omelette with salad (without stating the price) at our arrival late at night, and charging us 45 euro for that when checking out, , excluding wine, was a true rip-off, and very disappointing.

This is a family owned b & B. The proprietor Carmen is absolutely delightful. She makes you feel part of the family, is gracious and helpful. The location is outside of the town proper, however, a winding staircase through the neighborhood plants you directly in the Old Tow in about a 7 minute walk. The facilities are beautifully designed and immaculately clean. We loved it

We really enjoyed it and would stay there again!

Beautiful. We came in the off-season (November) and because we were the only guests, our room was upgraded at no cost, unasked! The sunset viewed from our terrace was absolutely unreal. Extremely comfortable bed. Breakfast was fantastic; artisan meats, cheeses and preserves, fresh omelette, local fruits and honey.

Pool area was being renovated but it was probably a bit too cold for a swim anyway. The house is located at the top of a hill, accessible by road or a lovely series of public staircases. It was quite a climb. We actually loved this (especially after a crazy huge dinner down in the village) but if exercise isn't your thing, beware. Also, "bed and breakfast" may be a misnomer since the breakfast was an extra cost. But that being said: It was absolutely worth it (13.50 euros each) and the fact that the cost was extra was clearly noted on the booking page and confirmation.

Positives. Very friendly owners and lovely house, tastefully decorated with great views.

Negatives. Breakfast looked great but was expensive. For a b&b, and given the price of the room, it would be nice if breakfast was included. When we first arrived there was initially nobody there so we had to call to be let in, a doorbell would help! Was a bit of a walk out up a hill, which we didn´t mind but not great if you are on your own or less mobile.

We couldn't recommend Montjuic enough - so stylish, relaxing, and comfortable. Carmen was a wonderful host - extremely welcoming, passionate about what she does and helpful when giving tips on where to eat/what to do in Girona. She is obviously a big foodie like us. One small thing is, while we really enjoyed the breakfast, we felt it was slightly overpriced for what you get, however, it was so impressive that many of the jams, yogurts etc Carmen had made herself. Please go to Montjuic - better than most hotels we've stayed in!

When I checked out I couldn't pay by credit card. The staff said me that their machine broke and I should find the bank by myself and find the cash. The nearest bank was far from the hotel and it took me an hour to find it. So it was very inconvenient! I lost almost two hours!!!

Montjuic B&B is located high on a hillside in an area of expensive homes overlooking the new part of Girona. It's within walking distance of the old town, though the climb back up includes almost 300 stair-steps plus some steep paths. The property is modern and brightly decorated with a comfortable public sitting area and breakfast room. The view out over the city is pleasant. Our room was spotless, comfortable, with a comfortable bed and maid service during the day. There was no bathtub but the three-way shower allowed a choice between a wand, overhead, or wall-jets and had a non-slip floor. The toiletries were natural products. Carmen provided a comprehensive briefing at check-in, including bus and taxi options and brochures on local and regional sights. She remembered our food preferences at breakfast from the booking process and made sure they were on the table for us. The quality of all the items available for breakfast was high. This is an exceptional B&B that will not disappoint.

We really-really enjoyed our stay in this wonderful B&B! Definitely to be repeated again, hopefully sometime soon! The location is absolutely amazing - on a hill with beautiful views over the city of Girona (the old city can be reached within a 10 min pleasant, somewhat steep walk through the local botanic garden). The B&B is set up in a beautiful house with very comfortable, spacious rooms full of light. The owners are very friendly and warm, really making one feel at home. Breakfasts were delicious. Guests are even 'spoiled' by the very tasty home-made desserts! The owners were also really helpful, providing very useful recommendations regarding places to visit, restaurants, shops, etc. All in all, a wonderful experience! Thank you!

If you travel to Girona by car, I'd suggest setting 'Carre 11 Setembre, 1' as the address of the B&B. At least, our navigation system failed to identify the address as it appears on booking.com, and we ended up circling around the city for quite some time before finding the right direction.

Carmen and Michael are the most wonderful hosts, it really is a special place to stay. The location is not in the city centre but that does mean spectacular views, peace and quiet and no problems parking. Its is reminiscent of Nob Hill in San Francisco without the trolleys of course.

Jolie vue, quartier select.
