The Centre Bonastruc ça Porta combines a museum and cultural centre dedicated to the history of Girona’s Jews with an associated research institute and library. The complex – about a dozen houses in the area where the synagogue is thought to have stood – is named after Nahmànides (known in Catalan as Bonastruc ça Porta), founder of the mystical Cabbalist school of Judaism and born in Girona in 1194. A doctor, philosopher and poet, Nahmànides became the rabbi of Girona and subsequently Grand Rabbi of Catalonia.

Alongside an array of artefacts, panels in the museum give a lively and informative insight into Girona’s Jewish history and the daily life of the community; a detailed model shows how the quarter would have looked in the thirteenth century. Other exhibits include Hebrew tombstones, many used as building materials after 1492 and since recovered. The illustrated underlit floor depicts the present site of the ancient “Bou d’Or” (Golden Calf) Jewish cemetery, which stood to the north of the city on the Montjuïc hill. The top floor is reserved for temporary exhibitions and houses a patio with a large marble Star of David set into the floor. These patios played an important part in the daily life of the quarter since Jews weren’t allowed to overlook Carrer de la Força they made up for this by creating their own interior courtyards and gardens.
