Not true Arab baths, but a XII-century building based on Moorish design, the Banys Arabs are one of the best-preserved medieval bathhouses in Spain. The scene, so it’s said, of hot-blooded medieval frolics, the building was closed down in the XV century, taken over in 1617 by a Capuchin convent, and restored in 1929 by Modernist architects Rafael Masó and Emili Blanc. An excellent free leaflet guides you through the various rooms; most impressive are the grand apodyterium (changing-room), with niches in the walls for clothes, and the plunge pool and caldarium, where parts of the underfloor heating system are visible. The green-tiled cupola can be reached via a spiral staircase and affords views of the cathedral.
