Formigues Islands

Price: free of charge

Formigues Islands (literally "ants islands" labeled as such by their numbers and how small they are) are part of the beautiful seascape of much of the central Costa Brava since, located just under a mile from the coast between Calella de Palafrugell and Palamos villages, are visible from many nearby beaches and coves. They are formed by sixteen small islands with a very interesting seabed that can reach 45 meters deep. On August 28, 1285 these islands were the scene of the most decisive naval battle in the history of Catalonia as troops of Admiral Roger de Llúria managed to beat the French King Philip III, Pope of Rome ally, in a crusade against the Catalans for a struggle about the throne of Sicily dynastic rights.

Cala Estreta Hut, located on the cove, has its origins, at least, in the sixteenth century, when it is documented in a letter found in Villaromà Castle as belonging to its owner, Bernat Simon. The present building, recently remodeled, could be rather from the nineteenth century, and it is a living proof of an era in which human beings lived facing the sea, using their own resources for survival respectfully.
