Church Santa Maria Cadaques

Address:Carrer de l'Església. 17488 Cadaqués

A short path climbs uphill to the sixteenth-century Santa Maria Church, with a simple exterior and tall belfry. A wrought-iron door bearing symbols of the town and the
sea opens to the ornate eighteenth-century altarpiece; among the gilded carvings are Atlas supporting the world, St Rita, patron saint of the impossible, and St Barbara, protector from storms and shipwrecks. The church hosts classical music concerts every summer; for information and tickets, contact the tourist office. Below the church, the pretty streets around Dr Callis and des Call gradually become busier with smart clothes shops, restaurants and artists’ studios and galleries before emerging into the tiny Plaça Dr Trèmols, where a narrow archway leads down to the seafront.

Bufalaranya Castle is located just outside the center of Roses (about 6 kms, route towards Cadaqués) and is a viewpoint towards the Pyrenees, the plain of North Ampurdan and Roses coast. Original from tenth century, despite their ruinous status shows some unique features of its construction, as a singular hole that allowed communication with the neighbour Pení mountain (where there was also a tower defense) and the drawing tiles that are arranged in a spike form (following the style known as opus spicatum).
