Monells Vaults are in the main square Plaça Major in Monells, a delightful medieval village that remains intact since that time. Here was celebrated the weekly market, and its importance was such that King James I the Conqueror set aside in this square the "pedra mitgera" a stone receptacle that was a standard measure of capacity for all the bishopric Girona. Today the square keeps a 1818 reproduction in the same place.
