With one of the largest municipal extensions of the Costa Brava, 33 km from Figueres and 70 km from Girona, el Port de la Selva offers a huge variety of landscapes: from the Mediterranean coast to the vineyards, and the rugged mountains to the foot of the Sierra de Rodes.
At El Port de la Selva, south of Llançà, the seascapes are already reminiscent of the Cap de Creus. This thriving fishing port attracts tourists in search of peace and quiet. Authors who have written about it include J. V.Foix and J. M. de Sagarra.
The town's history is strongly linked to its most important monument: the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, a national cultural heritage. A document found in the monastery, which dates from the year 974, refers to the village as "port quod dicunt armi-rodas" (harbour called Armen Rodas). It affords stunning panoramas over the Gulf of Lions. Passing ships used to send mules loaded with goods up to the monastery to pay their tributes to the Benedictine monks. Nowadays concerts of ancient and classical music are held there in summer.
Traditionally linked to fishing activity and to the trade of oil and wine, the phylloxera plague in the nineteenth century, which destroyed much of the vineyards, forced emigration of many families.
Very close to Sant Pere de Rodes you'll find one of the most charming villages on the Costa Brava: the Vall de la Santa Creu, a medieval town, formerly dependent on the monastery. We can walk its streets with quiet peaceful enjoyment, watch the XVIth century church, the creek that through the village and its medieval houses, almost untouched today. Vall de la Santa Creu is simply a return to the medieval past of the Ampurdán.
As in many other towns on the Costa Brava, the arrival of the 60's was a major economic and even social movement for the town, with the arrival of new visitors and residents. Those who come to el Port de la Selva appreciate the tranquility of their surroundings and the beauty of its landscapes, which has attracted a large number of painters.
The village offers a wide range of trails to walk, either on foot or by bicycle, to the Sierra de Rodes, to Cape Creus, or towards Llança, the nearby village. In total 30 kms of trails through the forest. El Port de la Selva also offers the possibility to practice a active sports as kayaking, sailing, swimming or fishing, all run in the bay. Underwater fishing a popular sport in el Port, as you are in Cap de Creus and you find submarine landscapes of great beauty.
The state of the beaches is excellent. From sandy beaches to rocky beaches, the Port offers a variety of environments. In all cases the water quality is always excellent. We highlight the beaches of Port de Val beach, del Pas beach, el Port de la Selva beach, Tabarella, and Tamariua beach.

Location right on the port and convenient for beaches and walking trails. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Apaertment style with small kitchenette. Trying to understand the car parking arrangements was a little difficult, but after time we got there. |

We booked on the basis of the photo of the view shown in their site, not beleiving it was going to be our actual room. It was and it was everything we hoped for. Being next to a national park was the deciding factor for us and that made a great day walk as well. The staff were all very friendly and helpful - nothing was too much! The restaurant (the Monterrey?) owned by the hotel on the seafront was outstanding with lovely local fish. Breakfast was good in the Timba restaurant within the hotel overlooking the harbour. Trying to understand the car parking arrangements was a little difficult, but after time we got there. |

Great location in a great little seaside town where everything is uncomplicated. Restaurants and cafes are very handy and the beach is almost at your door. We will be back. La ubicación, en pleno centro de El Port de la Selva - A pesar de colgar el cartel de no molestar entraron en nuestra habitación, dejaron la habitación a medio hacer y anduvieron con nuestras pertenencias. Cuando nos quejamos de que tocaran nuestras cosas en lo que considero un atentado a nuestra intimidad, nos dicen que tenemos razón y ya está. - Cobraron la habitación al llegar, por anticipado, pero a la hora de devolver la llave no había nadie en recepción. Un cuarto de hora después llamamos a un teléfono de atención al cliente. Nos dicen que la recepcionista está en un recado y que viene en seguida. Al cabo de unos minutos sale de la panadería de enfrente dónde dice que ha ido a encargar unos obsequios para la clientela. Vuelve sin ellos 20 minutos después de haber intentado devolver la llave. - Se anuncian como hotel, pero es aparthotel y no hay personal en el establecimiento las 24 horas del día. - Dicen que regalan el diario cada mañana. No nos dieron nada, pero el de recepción era de unos días antes. |

Muy cerca del paseo marítimo y zona de tiendas y restaurantes. Pagas una habitación más cara porque tienes vistas al mar... Cuando en realidad está de cara a un paseo con tráfico de personas y coches y bastante ruido molesto por la noche y un puerto con embarcaciones delante. Que se ve la playa desde la habitación, es verdad, pero no era de las mejores vistas al mar que hemos podido ver. Me pareció un poco cara para luego no poder dormir bien en toda la noche y sin piscina. |
